Washington and Thurgood Marshall. Finally, one article examined African-American oratory more broadly, discussing the ‘‘Socio-Historical Perspectives of Black Oratory’’ (1970). Until very recently, however, the period 1967–71 represented the high-water mark (using the term very loosely) of the journals’ concern with African-American oratory. Rarely have even three articles devoted to the study of black oratory appeared in any given year; generally the number has been one or two. In the discipline’s journals, the most studied individual figure since 1971 has Page xiii been Barbara Jordan (four articles, of which three critiqued her keynote address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention).

In the same year, Arthur L. Smith (Molefi K. Asante) published the first book that essayed a broad analytical framework for black rhetoric, although it focused specifically on black revolutionary rhetoric. In Rhetoric of Black Revolution, Asante examined the history, strategies, and topics of black revolutionary rhetoric and also discussed the nature of the black audience.
